Interior MinTheodorikakos: Step-by-step return to normalcy
NewsroomThe return to normality will be gradual as "we are not yet done with the coronavirus, but acting together and with discipline we will succeed," Interior Minister Takis Theodorikakos said on Wednesday in an interview with ANT1 TV.
Regarding the special-purpose leave for parents with school-age children, Theodorikakos clarified that it will be extended at least until the end of May for those who have children up to 12 years old, while for those who have children attending high school, it will end on May 18, when schools open. This applies to public-sector employees, he said, adding that it is self-evident that there should be a similar provision for the private sector.
Regarding the time of arrival of public-sector employees to their jobs, he clarified that this will happen in three phases: at 07:00, at 08:00 and at 09:00 in the morning, with the aim of avoiding congestion on public transport.
Moreover, he said that teleworking, which is already being used by 30 pct of public-sector employees, will be supported. From May 4 to May 18, travel is only allowed within the region of residence, the minister said, adding that travel would be permitted throughout the Attica basin, including the islands of the Saronic Gulf, such as Salamis and Aegina.
Regarding the fine of 150 euros for those who do not wear a mask, Theodorikakos said that "we do not rely on a system of penalties and fines but on the conscious efforts of each of us."
Finally, he noted that playgrounds, kindergartens and Open Care Centres for the Elderly (KAPI) will remain closed, adding that decisions are being made gradually and that the issues will be re-examined every one or two weeks, as the threat of pandemic has not gone away.
