Main opposition New Democracy President, Kyriakos Mitsotakis paid a visit to the outlying Greek island of Kastellorizo on Sunday, stressing that it enjoyed all the "inviolable rights arising from the Law of the Sea" and that Greece will defend these against any and all challenges.

"My presence here is not just symbolic. It is a statement of the unity of our nation, which is a shield for the security of the country and signals our dedication to peace and stability," Mitsotakis said, arriving on the island as part of a tour of the Dodecanese island group.

Mitsotakis visited the island's natural harbour and talked with local residents, including the mayor of Megisti, the main town. He promised that an ND government will take steps to make life easier for the Greek islands.

"Through small interventions that normally do not cost a great deal we can make the life of island residents a great deal better. We will work on a development plan specially for small islands," he said. ND's leader also visited a Navy ship anchored in Kastellorizo, the island's police station, health centre and coast guard.

He is next due to visit the islands of Kalymnos and Kos, which are the last stops on his tour.
