Interior Min.: Voting is a right and an obligation in democratic rule

Newsroom

Caretaker Interior Minister Antonis Roupakiotis called on Greeks to exercise their right to vote and support democracy, after he cast his vote at Sepolia in Athens on Sunday.

"It is both a right and an obligation to support the democratic form of government, which creates and safeguards rights when voters themselves support it, whereas when its validity comes into question, these rights are cast in doubt and revoked," Roupakiotis said.

Referring to conditions of austerity brought by Greece's loan agreements (memoranda), he said that they "oblige us to participate in voting and to strengthen democratic rule that may not be perfect as a system, and have handicaps, but there is none better."
