Child and baby dead, four missing after dinghy carrying refugees capsizes at sea
NewsroomA four-year-old child and a baby drowned on Friday after a dinghy carrying migrants and refugees capsized in waters north of the island of Oinousses near Chios on Friday morning. A major search-and-rescue operation has been launched by Frontex and the Greek coast guard to find four people that have been reported missing.
Another 12 people have been rescued so far, authorities said, including five men, three women, three children under six and a 12-year-old.
Based on the information so far, there were 18 people on board the boat when it capsized.
In addition to coast guard and Frontex vessels, a Hellenic Air Force helicopter and a Frontex aircraft are also participating in the search.
The incident was first note at 11:00 on Friday when the overturned dinghy was found. The passenger ship "Nissos Rhodos" that was sailing in the area immediately started a search, which then evolved into a rescue operation.
