Leros residents threat with mobisations due to large number of migrants on the island

The residents of the island of Leros are threatening with mobilisations due to the large number of refugees and migrants that are hosted on the island's facilities and also because more migrants are expected to be transferred from the island of Symi to Leros.

The mayor of Leros Michalis Kollias characterised the condition preavailing on the island unacceptable, as approximately 3,000 foreign nationals are already on the island.

"It is impossible to take such decisions and bring more migrants here. We already have a great problem. The facilities can host up to 800 people and we already have 2,000, some of them are on the beach with a blanket and a sheet", he said.

The mayor called on the residents to block the port and not allow the ferry with the 40 migrants from Symi to dock.

"We will go to port and call on the people to come and protest and from then on everyone should assume his responsibilities", the mayor said.

Meanwhile, almost 7,000 migrants and refugees arrived on the N. Aegean islands in October

The migrants and refugees flows to the northern Aegean islands call the autumn of 2015 to mind. Eight dinghies carrying 323 foreign national arrived on Lesvos island from Thursday midnight and were sent to Moria hotspot where the number of the hosted now exceeds 15,000 people.

Meanwhile, a total of 815 asylum seekers are going to leave from Lesvos on Friday with two warships while another 58 individuals will leave from Moria on Sunday evening for the port of Piraeus. All the migrants and refugees will be sent to hosting facilities on the mainland.
