Mitsotakis: The new Constitution will send a message of modernisation
NewsroomPrime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis explained to SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Monday in parliament during the debate on the revision of the Constitution that his proposals were not rejected by New Democracy but by the Greek people on July 7 elections.
"The next revision can't take place before ten years. Today let's make a cool assessment of what exactly happened during this process [...] As of tomorrow, the country will have a new Constitution, the Constitution of 2019. It will bear the stamp of today's parliamentary majority but it will also be a product of inter-party consensus," Mitsotakis underlined.
The prime minister accused main opposition leader of saying nothing about the climate change, the public administration, the education or justice adding that he is once again he falls short the expectations in that historic time for the country.
Referring to the issue of the election of state leadership, Mitsotakis stressed: "The solution we are proposing is the only one that allows us to disconnect the election of the President of the Republic from the early dissolution of the parliament [...] The election of the President of the Republic cannot be part of the political agenda of those who propose him."
The Constitution that will come into force on Tuesday will send a message of modernisation, Mitsotakis stressed.
"As Greece leaves behind the period of crisis, this Constitution frames the national effort for a worthy Greece," the prime minister concluded.
