Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will travel to Cairo, Egypt, on Tuesday to attend the 7th Trilateral Summit of Egypt - Greece - Cyprus. During his visit to Egypt, he will sign a trilateral programme for Greece-Cyprus-Egypt investment cooperation and bilateral Greece-Egypt and Cyprus-Egypt programmes, respectively.
Amid a growing and multilevel crisis in the region, the prime minister will reportedly stress the need to respect international law, and especially the principle of good neighbourliness, as a basis for developing relations between the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean.
In particular, he will underline that this trilateral institution, which is open to all states in the region whose foreign policy focuses on respect for international law, is a model for cooperation with specific actions in the fields of investment, energy, environment, culture and youth, utilising Greece's geostrategic position at the crossroads of three continents.
Mitsotakis will point out that a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, with the effective resumption of negotiations as soon as possible, is necessary for peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean. He is expected to repeat that this solution must be based on UN decisions and cannot include the continued presence of occupation troops on Cyprus. Also, that it must be agreed solution on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with political equality, as clearly defined by UN decisions that benefits all the Cypriot people.
Finally, it will be emphasised that this established trilateral cooperation is a strategic option for promoting peace, security, stability and cooperation in the fragile Mediterranean region.
Much of the prime minister's talks in a trilateral and bilateral context will be devoted to dialogue on regional developments, including, among others, the situation in Syria, Libya and the Middle East peace process, as well as on international issues, such as the fight against international terrorism and illegal migration, the necessary coordination on security issues, but also on the cooperation of the three countries in promoting mutual positions in international organisations.
Mitsotakis will also have meetings with members of the Greek community in Cairo.
