Eurostat: Greek unemployment rate eased to 18.1 pct in March

The Greek unemployment rate eased to 18.1 pct of the workforce in March from 18.4 pct in February, Eurostat said in a report released here on Monday.

The EU executive's statistics agency said Greece recorded the biggest reduction of the unemployment rate in the EU, from 20.2 pct in March 2018 to 18.1 pct in 2019. The number of unemployed people totaled 850,000 in Greece, with the unemployment rate among men at 14.4 pct and among women at 22.8 pct. The unemployment rate among young people (aged below 25 years) was 40.4 pct in March from 39.4 pct in February and 38.8 pct a year earlier.

In the Eurozone, the unemployment rate eased to 7.5 pct in May from 7.6 pct in April and 8.3 pct a year earlier. In the EU, the unemployment rate was 6.3 pct in May from 6.4 pct in April and 6.9 pct in May 2018. Greece (18.1 pct in March), Spain (13.6 pct) and Italy (9.9 pct) recorded the highest unemployment rates while the Czech Republic (2.2 pct) and Germany (3.1 pct) recorded the lowest rates.
