Achtsioglou accuses government of scaring pensioners

Newsroom

"The government and the media are once again trying to create a false impressions and frighten pensioners regarding the recalculation of pensions," Effie Achtsioglou, SYRIZA's head of labour and social security issues, said on Thursday.

According to a SYRIZA statement, Achtsioglou said the truth was that:

- The SYRIZA government had in 2018 definitively and irrevocably cancelled the reduction of the personal difference and related cuts in pensions demanded by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

- Pursuant to the law that SYRIZA voted, no cuts were made or planned and pensioners will continue to receive the same pensions as before.

- Any effect of the recalculation was only beneficial, with over 600,000 low-income pensioners seeing increases in their pensions from January 1, 2019 that would continue over a five-year period.

"Maybe New Democracy has never come to terms with the above facts or has other intentions. Whatever the case, it must stop violating common sense and insulting pensioners," Achtsioglou concluded.
